Research Assistant Tuition Subsidy Increase

Dear Colleagues,

In March, we wrote to the community to describe how MIT is investing in strategic priorities to address longstanding Institute needs during the coming 2023 fiscal year. Among these priorities is increasing central funding for graduate student support – absorbing the tuition shortfall for National Science Foundation (NSF) fellows in active status and taking on a larger share of research assistant tuition.

We now write to share with you that, effective July 1, 2022, the Institute subsidy for graduate student tuition for research assistants during the academic year will increase from 53 percent to 55 percent. With this change, the tuition subsidy will have increased a total of 5 percentage points since the start of fiscal year 2022.

As a reminder, a summary of stipend levels, health insurance rates, and tuition and fees for graduate students for the 2022–23 academic year is available on the Office of the Vice Chancellor website.

During the coming fiscal year, we will continue to work with the deans, school councils, and other faculty leaders to assess our progress in supporting graduate students in the context of other budget priorities.
