Dean, School of Engineering
About the position
The dean of the School of Engineering is responsible for executing the school’s mission to educate the next generation of engineering leaders, to create new knowledge, and to serve society. Working closely with faculty, staff, postdocs, students, alumni, and external thought leaders, the dean develops strategies to sustain and enhance the school’s position of leadership in the world. They implement policies and practices that accelerate scientific discovery, innovation, and the application of knowledge for the betterment of humankind. The dean shapes the school’s strategy with regards to MIT’s engineering education, research enterprise, faculty hiring and advancement, collaborations with industry and government, entrepreneurial programming, and administrative operations. As leader of MIT’s largest school, the dean is also responsible for developing programs and initiatives that strengthen a sense of belonging for members of the Institute’s engineering community, as well as foster diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the school.
