Exception to pay program

Dear Colleagues,

In mid-April, near the beginning of the pandemic, President Reif wrote to the community to update us on MIT’s financial picture and the Institute’s next steps. As a part of the Institute’s cautious and careful planning during an uncertain time, he outlined immediate measures to be taken by the MIT community to control costs. One of these measures was the suspension of merit increases for the coming academic year, beginning with those that would have normally been awarded in July 2020.

Recently, MIT senior leadership revisited this initial decision. After considering MIT’s financial picture, we are pleased to announce that an exception to the April decision has been approved for eligible staff members:

  • Administrative, Campus Medical, Sponsored Research, and Other Academic Staff hired on or before July 1, 2020, whose full-time equivalent salary is less than $75,000 will receive a 3% increase, effective January 1, 2021.
  • Support Staff hired on or before October 1, 2020, whose full-time equivalent salary is less than $75,000 ($36.06 per hour based on a 40-hour work week) will receive a 3% increase, effective March 29, 2021 (coinciding with their regular review cycle date).
  • Service Staff, Visitors, Fellows, Postdoctoral Scholars, and Lincoln Laboratory are not included in this plan as they follow different processes; individuals in these categories who have questions should contact their local HR administrator.

This is not a merit increase. The threshold of less than $75,000 allows us to provide an increase to many staff members while also considering existing and anticipated Institute expenditures. Our usual merit pay program will resume as of July 1, 2021 (FY2022).

If you have any questions, please contact your local HR administrator, HRO, or Compensation Specialist.

Sincerely,

Ramona Allen
Vice President for Human Resources
